Athamantis also catalogued with number 230 is a small asteroid that it orbits between the Mars orbits and Jupiter that I could locate with the small telescope which I have, refractor of 90mm. of diameter and 1400mm. of focal length with a certain difficulty since it had magnitude 9,9 when it was located next to his opposition.

Athamantis peculiarly only has an eccentricity of 0,061, surprising one and completely stable orbit to be asteroids    with a greater semiaxis of 2,38 A.U. therefore, in the perihelion or point next in its orbit to the Sun is to 2.24A.U., and in the aphelion or point more moved away to 2.5A.U., therefore, it only moves away 1/4 of astronomical unit of the perihelion to the aphelion.

Athamantis & its orbit

Athamantis has an orbital period of 3,68 years and a period of rotation on its axis of 23,99 hours. His Albedo is of 0,14, very low, therefore, quite weak one of magnitude, with an absolute magnitude of 7,35 and a coefficient of magnitude of 0.27. However, the inclination with respect to the ecliptic of Athamantis is of 9.43º, that is to say, elevated occurring the chance that when I located it found to less than 30 ' of arc of precious double g arietis.

Was something easy to locate to Athamantis in the rich field of Aries by the fact that November 1st of 2000 happened to less than 30 ' of arc of g arietis, although its magnitude was of 9,9, very weak.

During year 2000, year of the discovery and Athamantis location it crossed the constellations of Piscis and Aries.

Athamantis during 2000 year

The observations for the location of Athamantis were made the night of the November 1st  and night of the November 2nd of 2000 when it closely together passed of the field of g arietis, done that I took advantage of to locate it and to discover it. The climatologic conditions were very good, typical of already cold the Majorcan autumn and clear atmosphere, therefore, was no excessive difficulty when finding it. Then the magnitude of Athamantis was of 9.9.

The first observation was made to 19h.31m. (U.T.) of November 1st of 2000 and second on the following day, November 2nd at 18h.24m.(U.T.). In the first observation and thanks to the computer science    program Guide version 7,0 I already could identify it, although the stellar field is rich in weak stars, and during the second night the displacement of Athamantis could be observed on the stellar field next to g arietis.

Athamantis close to gamma arietis

Therefore, the date of discovery and identification of the asteroid Athamantis or 230 it was November 1st of 2000.

Athamantis was discovered by K Of Ball the September 3rd of 1882 in Bothkamp. It has a diameter of 113 km, and 0,12 " arc, its absolute magnitude is of 7,35 with a coefficient of magnitude of a 0,27 and index of 0.85 color B-V.

On the other hand, down, by means of a program in Java which I have found in the network, with the courtesy of Osamu Ajiki de AstroArts and Ron Baalke of the JPL,   you can see the orbit of Athamantis as well as its distance in relation to the Sun and the Earth and its position with respect to the Solar System for any date.

Agamenon  In classic mythology Atamante or Atamaz, beocias like king, son of Éolo and Enáreta was well-known in the legend. Its legend has been enriched by numerous episodes, some contradictory times, due to the profusion whereupon it was treated by the tragic ones in today lost works for us, like the crowned Atamante of Sófocles, frixo or the Ino de Eurípides, etc.

The celebrity of Atamante must to a large extent to the performance of the women to whom he was united. One married in the first place with Néfole of that it had to frixo, to hele and Macisto, but soon after repuded to contract new nuptials with Ino. Of this union was born Learco and Melicertes. In Ino fears with respect to the inheritance arise and plots tending machinations to exterminate to their two hijastros.

The intervention of Néfe, or the own Zeus, sending a sheep of vellocino of gold that will take them flying towards the Cólquide, will full stop put to this episode, opening a new chapter of lucks that will fill the Argonauts with their expedition. Another version exists that presents/displays to us to Atamante and Ino driven crazy by Hera, that was that taken revenge the aid that these had lent Dionisio. In her Atamante killed Learco, whereas Ino fled with Melicertes to end up throwing itself with him to the sea. Finally, Atamante, exile, look for a place where to found a city. In Tesalia, when seeing that wolves, before their presence, left to a lamb just dead, and supposing that there it was the confirmation of oracule that had assured to him that their works would stop when the wild animals offered their food to him, founded a city to that it gave the name of Athamantia.
