Mitología de Cetus (La ballena)

Cetus corresponds to the mass of marine animal of the whale elevated in the legend to protagonist of the faustos events that implied king Cefeo, their Cassiopea wife and its Andrómeda daughter which they had a happy end, except the monster, thanks to the intervention of Perseo or horse of its winged Pegaso or Pegasus.

Eudoxio, Arato and Tolomeo gave the region, the name of Kétos, that in Greek perhaps means ballenapero was only due to the imponencia of the figure animal that it symbolized. Figure that in the classic engravings, is very far from representing the calm cetacean, but that declares generally, the capricious fantasy of the authors who constantly were relieved representing the terroríficos and improbable monsters.

ori.gif (1448 bytes) Characteristics

The head of Cetus, the whale, occupies the northeastern angle where there is cuaro stars ready in rhombus form which they would have to delineate the profile. The body extends in diagonal throughout the alignment which they form of the northeast towards southwest formed by six stars, are other stars smaller than they conform the tail of the whale.  Cetus, altogether, reunites to a discreet number of stars no more intense than the second interesting magnitude and some variables between which it emphasizes or Ceti or Mira, prototype of this type of variable stars.

The zone of the sky that occupies Cetus is enormous of about 1230 square degrees, an only inferior extension to Virgo and the Great Bear, and practically equal to the constellation of Hercules.

Cetus is in the equatorial zone of the firmament between the parallels of North 10º to South 25º, reason why him it makes visible as much in the North hemisphere as in the south. It is observed during the months of August until February. It limits the north with the constellation of Piscis and Aries, the east with Aquarius, the south with Scultor and Fornax and the west with Eridianus and Taurus. The ecliptic, the red line that is observed in the graph does not cross the constellation almost but.

One is to 70º of South latitude with respect to galactic coordinates, is to say situa next to the South Pole of the Milky Route, for that reason it is a poor zone in stars shining, doubles and rich in galaxies since it represents an opened window the Cosmos.

Cetus I located the 16 to it of September of 1982 at the age of 15 years in the tourist locality of Can Picafort, Majorca, Spain.

Main stars

Alpha, a; of Menkar name, magnitude 2.80, of orange red color is to 130 years light. One is in the North zone of the constellation.

Beta, b; of name Diphda or Deneb Kaitos, of 2.20 magnitude intense yellow color, is to 63 years light.

Gamma, g; of Kaffaljidhma name, of magnitude 3.60, white color, it forms a double system whose secondary it is of magnitude 6.40, of clear yellow color is to 82 years light.

Omicron, or; of Mira name, one of the most famous stars of the sky prototype of an important class of variables of long period. It is a supergiant 400 times greater than the Sun, of dark red color, varies at first from magnitude 1.70 to 9.60 therefore becoming invisible, in a period of 331 days, although the maximum of brightness it usually does not reach arriving at a magnitude between 3 and 4. Sight was discovered like variable by Fabricius in 1596 first being discovered. Earth light is to 419 years.

Other objects

M 77, galaxies spiral of the Sb type, of 9.70 magnitude and diameter 9'x8', brilliant that is observed of face.
