Mythology of Monoceros

Monoceros or unicornio although the constellation was known like so for the first time in century XVII, in stellar letters of Jakob Bartsch of 1624 like the Unicornio, it never appeared as so in the catalogue of Bayer and although Bartsch it showed interest by this constellation, the truth is that much imagination makes lack to identify to a "Unicornio" in this star group, which is justified by the variety of versions that exist in the "position" of the animal in the firmament.

ori.gif (1448 bytes) Characteristics

Monoceros, are a medium constellation of 370º square, modern located in the stuck celestial equator to Orion. By her the equator cuts  to Monoceros the Milky Route of north to the south entering by Gemini and leaving by Puppis  and as so it is a rich constellation in stellar cluster and stars not indeed shining. We can observe plagued star fields and spectacular cluster. Monoceros 50º is observable in both hemispheres between the months of October to April culminating on the horizon for the inhabitants who we lived to 40º North or South latitude.

Monoceros limit the north with Gemini, to the west with Orion, the south with constelaciones of Puppis and Canis Major and to the west with Hydra and Canis Minor.

Monoceros  I located the 1 of January of 1982 at the age of 14 years from the locality of Inca, Majorca, Spain to it.

Constelación de Monoceros

Main stars

Alpha, a; of 3.94 magnitude and orange color, one is located closely together of Puppis in the South sector of Monoceros, locates to 144 years Earth light.

Beta, b; of located magnitude 5.01 and near Canis Major it is a blue star that dista 690 years Earth light.

Gamma, g; of 3.98 magnitude and orange color one is located closely together of the constellation of Orión; dista 640 years Earth light.

       Other objects

M50; precious stellar cluster located closely together of the constellation of Puppis in the South end of Monoceros, has a magnitude of 5.90, is formed by more than 100 stars of magnitude 9º until 14º in a field of 16' of arc. Dista 3,000 years Earth light and has a considered age of 78 million years.

NGC 2244, diffuse stellar and cloudy cluster of magnitude 4.80 located in the center of the constellation. It has an angular diameter and 24' of arc, is to 5,500 years Earth light and has an age of only 3 million years.

NGC 2286, stellar cluster located in the center of the constellation, has a magnitude of 7.50, 14' of angular diameter, is to 4,200 years Earth light, is formed by stars that go of the novena to the fifteenth magnitude.

NGC 2232, precious stellar cluster located closely together of Orion, magnitude 3.90, has an angular diameter of 30' of arc. Earth light is to 1,300 years and has an approximated age of 22 million years.
