Mythology of Pyxis

       Pyxis or the compass, was described for the first time in century XVIII by French astronomer Nicolas Louis of the Caille. It comprised of the old constellation Navis Argon, is one old constellation of the South hemisphere, that extended from Greater Dog (Canis Major) to the Cross of the South (Cru), and leaves from the Milky Way. It was represented by Argon, the ship of the Argonautas. As he were too great, French astronomer Nicolas Louis of the Caille in century XVIII divided it in three different constellations (Quilla or Carina , Popa  or Puppis and Vela).

           Pyxis or the compass is a small constellation located in the stuck South hemisphere to Puppis, between the parallels of 20º to 40º of South latitude, is very next to the equator of our galaxy, the Milky Way and therefore, he is observable a great amount of stars and some stellar accumulations. In the North hemisphere he is observable from November to February and in South hemisphere from October to the month of April.

            The constellation of Pyxis I located the 15 to it of December of 1985 at the age of 19 years in one cold night winter from the tourist locality of Can Picafort, Majorca, Spain. The constellation of Pyxis limits the north with the constellation of Hydra, to the east with Puppis, the south with the constellation of Vela and to the west with Antlia.

Main stars

       Alpha, a; with a magnitude of 3.69 it is of blue color, light is to 840 years and it reveals us that the star is a giant 1900 times more luminous than the Sun is located to the south of the constellation.

      Beta, b; with a magnitude of 3.97, light is to 388 years, its color is yellow, is also a giant 300 times more luminous than our Sun is located to the south of the constellation of Vela closely together.  

    Gamma, g; it stars orange, of Spectrum K, whose magnitude is of 4.02 which light of us is to 208 years, is a star 80 times more luminous than the Sun is located in the center of the constellation.

 

Other objects

            NGC 2818, stellar accumulation of magnitude 8.2 of 9' of diameter arc that is located to the south of the constellation of Vela closely together, is to 10,500 years Earth light, has a considered age of 990 million years.

            NOTE: One is in a zone, very, very very poor of stars, in the field are approximately three; there is a slight difference of magnitude, are together, its Spectrums are similarities, although they are not distinguished very well due to the little height in which one is, the main one seems to me white, however, secondary the bluish one; it is one pretty double, is most shining of the field, therefore, it does not exist any difficulty when finding it, is unfolded to simple eye with the ocular minor.
