Mitología de Triangulum Australe

The constellation of the austral triangle or Triangulum Australe was designed by the Dutch navigator Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederik de Houtman at the end of century XVI, does not have therefore, mythology. Both navigators observed their triangular form and wanted to reflect the constellation of Triangulum of the North hemisphere for the austral one.

ori.gif (1448 bytes) Characteristics

Triangulum Australe, or the austral triangle (TrA) is a small austral constellation located in the parallel of 70º of South, observable latitude solely in the South hemisphere during great part of the year and not in the north where I write these lines to you. One is next to the equator of the Milky Route and therefore, we can observe in her great amount of stars and stellar clusters, have a defined affluent form to a triangle but unlike his boreal component he is scalene and nonisosceles.

Triangulum Australe limits the north with the constellation of Norma, to the east with Circinus, the south with Apus and the west with Ara.

To date, I have not been able to locate it to be in very austral latitudes from the island of Majorca where alive, although I do not discard to someday make a trip to the seas of the south, and to lose to me in an island of the desert Pacific to be able to contemplate and to locate the constellations that I have left to discover.

Constelación de Triangulum Australe

Main stars

Alpha, a; of 191 magnitude and orange color, one is near the limit with Apus. It is a giant star 2300 times more luminous than our Sun that is to 415 years light of us.

Beta, b; located to the north of the constellation it shines with a magnitude of 2.84 and yellow color. Earth light is to only 40 years, its luminosity is similar to the lot.

Gamma, g; located in the other sector of the constellation, near Circinus something weaker has a magnitude of 2.88 than b, is a white star located to 182 years Earth light.

Other objects

NGC 6025; precious stellar cluster located to the north of the constellation closely together of Norm, has 5.10 a visual magnitude of and an angular diameter of 12' of arc. Pársecs of the Earth is to 840, has a considered age of 100 million years

To date observations by telescope have not been made since it is located in the South hemisphere, next to the celestial and invisible South Pole from where I write these lines to you, Majorca, Spain, although I do not discard to someday make a trip to the seas of the south, and to lose to me in an island of the Pacific to be able to contemplate and to locate the constellations that still I have left to discover.
